my contribution

pre production -
  • audience research
  • equipment and props
  • co-created voice description
  • production schedule - however Michael also created one.
  • co created - script 1 and 2
  • created and completed storyboard
  • created mind map
  • completed research into movies and what i would like to include
production
  • camerman
  • discussed way around things
  • changed the room around (around 1 and a half hours to get it right)
post production
  • my evaluation
this is our first draft of our film. i was unable to be here for when we got feedbAck from a young audience, however my team completed this and told me what they said was good and what was bad.
Notably good points:
  • Camera Shots
  • Audience liked the extended takes
  • Lighting
Notably Bad Points:
  • Shaky camera for some shots
Potential Improvements:
  • Some shots are unnecessarily long (may change opinion when voiceover is added)
  • Some shots could cut straight to the action (door bang for example)
One thing that i have noticed is that on the credits i have been put down for lighting and will has been put down for cameraman which is the wrong way round. this has now been changed.

film noir - diary entry

Michael has taken control of the editing of our sequence as i have been unable to help. i have looked at the scene while i have been busy with the blogger helping see how problems can be solved. i was unable to help with the editing as i have been away on the trip missing a week of work. this made me do all the work before hand making me unable to do other things. i have now completed what i have needed to do. Michael has now completed the editing just waiting for the voice over to be returned from the actor. overall i believe we have many shots which allowed us to use what clips we wnat. we didn't want to have little amount of clips as we were scares of time and with having lots of clips we can shorten it to what we need.

film noir - audience analyses

to begin with i have used excel to create graphs and pie charts to back up what the audience have written within the questionnaires.

as you can see a majority of the people i have asked to fill in my questionnaire are 15-20 year old as i asked them at our school while i also asked parents and grand parents. Not only this but i asked a larger amount of men than ladies. this could have had a different effect if it was balanced. i also asked people that lived in Peterborough, Huntingdon and Sawtry meaning that they are roughly from the same region.

as you can see from this a large majority of the people are white British and only one black British. this may also have a change if i asked an even amount.

getting into the real questions. i asked them would you typically watch film noir films. a majority of the people, 9 out of 10 said they don't. this maybe due to asking a more younger population who are into HD colour films. the two people who said the typically watch noir films was my grandparents. they can relate to the film noirs as they were around from that time period and know what everything is and enjoy detective work.

however people may not watch them typically but more people at a younger age do enjoy Film noirs. this was reverse to typically watching them from 9 not watching them to 9 like watching them.

from this you can see that more people prefer the old conventional noir films which is equal to people not liking them at all with new modern film noirs.

from this you can see what people like as a sub genre. i have looked at this and it shows that a majority like a comedy however i don't believe it would work well with a film noir.

when asking about what type of film noir they have watched, people struggled to put one down as they are very old and passes there mind. this is because film noirs are not as popular as they used to be. from these results they have shown me that a majority of people like film noirs however they do not typically watch them. i have asked a more younger population on their opinion as they are my main target audience trying to bring back the popularity of film noirs. also girls enjoy the love part of films so we have partially decided that the conflict will be over a women who is very attractive, bringing in romance and love. also a majority of boys prefer a bit of violence and crime so this would be the conflict in the film and would cause a detective to be involved.

film noir - audience results

as you can see these are the results of my questionaires for the closed questions. i will now put these into graphs so that it is easier to analyse. i will describe what people like with the open ended questions. Audience Results

Film noir - audience questionaire

to begin with i made a questionaire which consisted of not many questions as one of them was accidently repeated. i only noticed this after around 5 people had completed the questionaire. this is it below.

as you can see there is a minimal amount of questions. so after this i decided to ask just a few more questions to make the questionaire more worth while as seen below.

Film Noir Questionnaire

Film Noir - shooting pictures

these ae just a few pictures we managed to take just before filming.

These are our newspaper articles which Michael made to fit in with our storyline. they are in order so that the camera can go from oldest to newest to explain what has happened in the past.

this is the desk which most of the acting will be held.

this is were we decided to position the lights. it is out side the doors of the office so that the light cannot be seen in the shot and also would shine through the window.

This is our actor Graham, in his outfit. we decided to go for a smart suit scruffed up to make him look like a wreck. in this picture he is waiiting for the finishing touhes to be done to the setting.

this is me working the camera and attaching it onto the tripod. this is after i was testing out the shots we wished to do to make sure that they would work and the timing behind them.

this is the office before we re-arrange it taking out most of the stuff and changing were the main desk
will be.

this is the house we filmed in within Stamford. we got the transport there and back by Graham.

Film Noir - research into costume

There are many ways you can create iconic features in a film to create an effect that puts you in the mind frame of who people are and their status. clothing is a one of these areas taking up a main part. i am going to talk about clothing for males and female and what is usually seen in a film noir

Males
to begin with, usually male characters wear business suits which are black and white.  It would seem that the only way that a man's social status could be told was in the cut of that suit or whether the shirt was grimy. this classic style was usually warn by gangsters with a classy hat which showed that they had the money and power to do what they wish.
in our film i hope to find that we use the business suit style to fit in with the storyline. this would make him look wealthy however the roughness and scruffiness of the suit would show that he is not looked after and has changed from what he had been. also it would show that he has a profession which is a detective. i hat is also an item i would like to contain as it would top of the suit and made him look more like a detective.

Film Noir - research

All media texts are made with an audience in mind. generally, but not always, the producers make money out of that audience. therefore it is important to understand what happens when an audience 'meets' a media text.
audience research is a major part of any media companies work. they use, questionaires, focus groups and comparisons to existing movies and spend a great deal of time and money finding out if there is anyone out there who might be interested in their production.
I have so far analysed past noir films and have written what i would like to be in my film and what i would not. the three introductional films i have watched are:
- the endless night
- the foursquare film - a modern interpretation of noir film
- golden gloves
These have been shown in similar tasks and as well as the posters. i have also looked up the conventions of film noir and has given me a strong in sight on what i need to include to make it generic.

Film Noir - Shooting

We carried out our filming on the 1st March were we filmed in Will Hewitt's dad's house (Graham) who was happy for us to do what we wnated with his office. to begin with though, Graham picked us up from sawtry were we went to Michael's House in stilton to collect the props as they were to heavy to carry into school. from there we went into stamford were Graham lived. when we arrived it was to light to film in as the blinds didn't block out the sun light. so in this time we made sure that the set was set up correctly so that it would look as good as it could. this took around 1 and half to 2 hours setting up the scene. we waited around till it was dark and began to film.
Graham had a collection of clothing which could have worked in our film. but we concluded there that he should wear a black suit with a tie and scruffed it up to look like he was rough and depressed.
when we filmed we had enough time to continuely re take shots to get it at it's best. we took different shots to see what worked changing small parts of our storyboard. this wouldn't effect our voice over as it would work out fine anyways. the lighting was positioned in the living room lighting the the windows of the door. this created a good effect as it only light up the back of his head showing that he had a bad side of him (back lighting), run by Will Hewitt. Michael stood in the room we filmed in out of shot to see that the production run smoothly while I videoed experimenting with shots. some shots became very blury and some were very hard to film due to being so long. Graham acted well and understood everything we wanted from him. we had the correct props and worked amazingly. we created a video were it showed how the room changed from our setting to back to normal. this will be put on my final evaluation.

Film noir - voice over

As you can see this below, is a email sent from and to Ockenden. we obtained this contact through Mr Shephard and Michael Raucci emailed him to find out if he would be able to do a new york ascent for our film. He was very generous and offered his time to us and said that if we find something wrong with it and needs re changing he will do that for us. he also has a media facility were he can create very clear speeches. we was very thankful for his time. we have not yet completed the voice over as we would like to complete the editing first so that we can time how long we want the speech and what to say in the write order.

film noir - production schedule

This is the production schedule that i have produced myself. however, due to a lack of commuincation me and Michael have both created one. this is the one i have created and Michael has put his one onto his page.

Production Schedule

film noir - location

As you can see this is our location for which we filmed in. this was in stamford at Graham's house (Will Hewiits dad). this is the offcice which we totally re-arranged to make it suit our needs.

film noir - prop's used

we chose certain props so that it would fit in with the time period and make our film noir look realistic and professional. some of the props were actually used such as the type writer to show the title 'Candi' at the end of the opening. newspaper clippings were used to show the past which had occured to him. there were three newspapers:
1. detective extroadinaire caught covering up killings - used to show that he has turned against the public.
2. mobster roundup continues: over 60 arrests made - shows the detective at his prime
3. bekowski family behind new york crime ring - shows that the detective has stitched up the gang he was invloved with and is now hated by them.

The next item is the type writer.

Radio - triggers voice over

glass - drinks whiskey - shows depressed

the overall table of props

film noir - risk assessment

our group has carried out the risk assessment to ensure that the problems we could encounter can be solved so that we are safe and ready to film. this is for the film 'Candi' held in the grounds of will's house. this was completed by William Hewitt on the 28th february.
document 1 - general risk assesment form

document 2 - risk assessment form - part B

document 3 - general risk assessment form - Part A

document 4 - risk assesmnt form - Part B

film noir - diary entry

We have finished filming on the 1st March which allowed us loads of time to prepare our selves for the evaluation and editing. we optained all the shots we had wanted and have now started editing. all the shots we have done are for the opening scene of 'Candi'. All blog tasks will be completed as soon as possible. most of them are completed however need to be posted and annotated.

film noir - storyboard

As you can see this is the story board which i have created by using the final script (created by Chris Howard & Michael Maucci. as you can see it contains all the shots and a description of what is occuring.

film noir - lighting risk assessment

To be able to create affects using the lighting, we had to pass in the lighting test. william took that role as lighting man and completed the test. this test showed that will had the capability and safety to use the lighting kit and was used at the scene. on the right is the scanned version of the certificate.

Now as this has been completed by Michael Raucci, i was able to complete the storyboard and will be uploaded tomorrow with the production scehdule and equipment & props.

film noir - story synopsis

An ex-detective named Cole Kelso used to be a top reporter in New York, known for arresting and locking up large quantities of gang members. he was seen the the public eye as a hero. A type of person who they tell there kids what to be when they grow older. you could say he was a role model. not only this but police followed all his leads, getting the evidence only from him. he would always be first. revealing the truth, finding that vital evidence to lock someone up. instead of months or years to solve the crime it only took a matter of weeks. every front cover contained him. mostly known for his latest newspaper article catching a mass of 60 gang members for a series of murders. But this all changed when he met a married women named Candi 'later to be found to be married to a New York mobster, John Bekowksi.
This john Bekowski was known for his trade in drug importation and a suspicion of carrying out jobs such as murder. you could say he was a scary man protected by the whole family and friends. he began becoming strong friends with this women 'Candi' trying to get a chance out of her. this led to jobs having to be done for the gang in a chance to get closer to her. Before you know it, he was covering up killings and framing others for the deeds. This didn't go down well when the NYPD see what he is doing and is stripped from his rank and left running from the police. from a once heroic, role model to a no body he decided to try and get the public back on his side. how? he wanted to frame the once gang he tried to join all because of a women. when trying to frame the gang by sending evidence to the police was caught red handed. now not only wanted by the police but by the gang he is left to die away in side. he knew Candi was out of reach so resulted in drowning his sorrows with alcohol and drugs.
we follow the story of the aftermath of him drowning his sorrows. it begins in a scruffy old office in the backstreets of New York were he sits at his type writer thinking about Candi while drinking and smoking. after all of this sorrow describing his past throughout he is intruded by a bang at the door. Cole Kelso is out of shot and a second bang goes off. you do not know what has happened leaving a sense of enigma code. who has died or what has happened? this is all because of this women called Candi and you will not know who that women is as the name is left discrete.

film noir - filming location research

To begin with we wanted an office to be the focus of our film. we thought of a variety of areas we could film from a class room at school to a real office. however, we believed that filming in these locations would be very hard because as the school is an area to learn, it is very hard to find a room that is free. also with a classroom we would have to totally change what is in the room as cables would show that it is not a noir film as they didn't have the technology in that time period. also the types of posters on the room and furniture would give away the time period. not only this but a real office would be hard to work in as we wouldn't be allowed to unplug computers etc as it would disrupt workers and slowing down a business.
this took us time to think about until we have got a chance at filming at William Hewitt's dad's house. he has explained that he has a large office with a big oak table. if this is possible to film in then we would be able to change what we want in the room as it would be in our use. with the wooden table this would mean that we don't have to source it.

film noir - research

I am going to analyse three noir films and pick out parts which i believe would go well in my film.

(i had the link on here however, recently has disapeared and cannot find the video again)

i have analysed this video and i believe that there ae key conventions which i have to add into my production. to begin with, the film would have to be in black and white so that it fits in to all noir films.
the male characters would have to wear suits to look like real men but not only this the hero must look attractive and have morals. all characters would smoke as in the past, smoking was thought of as cool and attractive and also was heavily advertised. the female would have to be also very attractive and the middle of the story line driving the conflict. as you can see from this video, the men are fighting over the women through jelousy and this is a reason which i want to add into my film. not only this but the women would have to dress glamerous to look spoilt and rich. i would use shadows to make it look eary and that they are sneaking up on something.
this is a modern version of a noir film but have got confussed with the use of propps. in this video they use technology such as cash machines and the internet which was not invented 50 years ago at this level. however, i want to try and get the accent american style as english is not conventional. also the inspector is a convention as it shows the good trying to solve crimes and problems which is usually the drive of the narrative involving murder and gangs. not only this but i will try and base the film within a city to symbolize a maze full of crime.
this last video basically just sums up what a have said i would like to include within my film. these are:
- black and white
- men wearing suits
-smoking is thought of as cool
-gambling and crime
all the villains will care about is money and how they looked upon such as looking powerful, while others will show morals such as caring to show that they are good driving a conflict between the two.

film noir - final script

This is our third draft which puts the voice over and the stage directions in the right places removing the camera shots and the character bio's. all three of these scripts were completed by michael & I.

Film Noir - Candi - Script Draft 3

film noir - script draft 2

this is our second draft which starts to include stage directions and camera shots which we wish to include. also the voice over is added to to make it slightly longer.

Film Noir - Candi - Script Draft 2

film noir - script draft 1

This was our first draft which shows just the character bio's and the voice over which we wish to use over the scene of a confussed and terrified actor. the voice over will describe a summary of his life and his interceptions in life which have turned him to a once respected man to a noone.

Film Noir - Candi - Script Draft 1

examples of lighting

diary entry - film noir

Earlier on this week will was able to cast an actor to play the role of Cole Kelso, the only actor we need. Michael & I will clarify the actor is suitable for the role as we're not sure the age of the actor will fit the stereotype we're trying to portray with the character.
We now also have our choice of filming location approved, so we are able to film there whenever we are ready.

We are looking to start filming on Thursday 1st March. We would have completed it this weekend, but restrictions on the use of filming equipment means the 1st is the soonest we can. This is helpful however, as it gives us more time to complete the pre-production rather than rushing & making mistakes.

michael has now got in contact for the voice over. Simon Ockington was a name given to us, as he is frequently involved in acting workshops for directors creating productions such as ours, and he is apparently very good at american accents. We have been assured that he is likely to be happy to help us, but michael will contact him at some point within the next few days. The voice over is not required until we have at least started the editing process, as Michael & I discussed that it would be better to tailor the voice over (pauses, emphasis etc.) to the edited production so that it suits, and looks professional.

we are abit behind schedule as michael has been very busy over the weekend, so by tomorrow the storyboard will be completed with the material michael gives me to do so.

Film Noir - Character Bio

Cole Kelso
throughout our film we only contain 1 character. this character had a heroic past saving many lives and was prassed for his detective ways solving the top crimes such as arresting over 60 mobster for the murders in the streets of New York. this was all to well and went to his head as he began to get involved with the 'bedowski mobsters' alll because of one girl. he used to be strong until drugs tor apart his life. he began to let vital evidence to slip away to cover up the gang so that he could get closer to the girl. his name is Cole Kelso, once proud name to a disrespected name. once the public found out about this he was stripped from his rank and was wanted by the many states around america. once this occured he knew that he had done wrong and tried to be who he once was. he began to frame the crimes upon Bedowski gang and was caught in the process. now the gang is wanted for a numerous amount of crimes. this enfumed the gang and now, Cole Kelso is hunted by them. now he is left a nervous wreck hidding in the back streets of New York.

so what is he now like?
he drinks his sorrows away in an old office waiting for something to happen. although he wants to die, he doesn't want to face the gang or the public hiding in the dark. he is in deep love with a women called 'Candi' who you don't know much about. he is a heavy smoker and is nothing like he used to be. he used to be strong and able to face any problem. the police looked up to him. now he is nothing.

lighting lesson

Spill - extra source of light
in a noir film we should use at least one light to create the effect that it is actually a noir film.
there are two types of lighting:
- natural
-artificial
they both create different effects

Would do they do?
creates shadows
silhouute
creates mood
puts a representation on character
dark? villain
light? hero, good side

equipment?
- scrim
- bulb
- barn doors
- stand
- plug
- surge protector
- clips
- gloves

three point lighting

it is a standard method used in visual media
there are three types of lights:
- key light
- fill light
- back light
they have to go in this order

do's and don't
1. always man the lights
2. don't use the lights outside
3. switch off when not used
4. light parrallel with leg
5. use gloves if you think the light head is hot
6. don't look at the light
7. lights at low level
8. never replace bulb
9. use surge protector
10. lights in risk assessment

diary entry - film name

michael and i had been thinking about possible names we could have for our title which has a meaning to the play. these are what we thought of:

- Candi
- Victoria olivia grace
- Rose anna-bell
- The life of Cole Kelso
- Life and fall of Cole Kelso
- Crimanl reporter
- Trials Tribulations & Tabloids
- Brights Lights, Cold world
- Into Enemy Hands

to conclude, we finalised with the idea of 'Candi' as it is the main downfall of Cole Kelso (the ex detective). this way it would leave a sense of mystery and romance as it is a very glamerious female name. within the story line, 'Candi' name will appear on the type writer without a full understanding of why it is there, leaving the rest of the film a cliff hanger to keep the audience in.she is the initial reason he got involved in the criminal underworld of New York, and as you would see throughout the film, she will be the reason he intends to get out.

film noir - research into props

For our production we wish to leave the story a mystery. So, we wanted to use a way of typing that would revela a name called 'candi'. for this to fit into the time period we have thought bout using inc and and quil to write it on a piece of paper. as you can see below.

however we believe we are able to retreive a type writer which will look more pratical for a detective as it looks more professional. this is a type writer.
as you can see it would be very heavy and would fill the table much more. This would mean that it would suit the scene much better. However it may be hard to get unless our contact actually allows us to use it.
another thing is that we want the actor to look stressed. way we could do this is by giving the actor alchol to drink in the scene so that he looks like he is trying to drain away his sorrows. also we could give him cigarettes to give him as a sign of trying to relax. also ciggarettes were very popular in the 1960s and heavy advertised so would also fit into the conventions of film noirs.
for the table, we would need a heavy oak table as normal tables would look to modern. however getting hold of one of these and transporting this would be very hard. if we are unable to obtain one we would have to use a table cover or to use lots of props to cover the table so it fits in with the time period.

diary entry - finalised plan

This is what me and michael had conlcuded to our opening scene to be. michael wrote this up as i helped him put them in order. this is now added to our final script and will soon have completed it finally. after this i will complete the storyboard once we have also completed shot list.
The ideas we have had for the opening scene, including credits, shots, actions, music and voice over are as follows:

Fade in -

  • Typical loud dramatic Noir music (to be decided)
  • Shot on desk
  • Fade in logo (to be created)
  • Fade out logo
  • Newspapers stack - show 2 other characters
  • Final newspaper to say: 'detective extraordinaire caught covering up killings'
  • Tilts downward
  • Tracks and pans to the door
  • Frame showing feet of actor
  • Tracking shot showing main character walking back to his seat
  • Turns on radio (this triggers the beginning of the voiceover talking - which is the main character looking back)
  • Looks at/through newspapers, then throws in the bin
  • Looks stressed/uneasy, sitting in seat
  • Figgitting, taps typewriter seemingly randomly, in boredem
  • Bang on door (out of shot)
  • Main character looks towards the bang worried
  • Camera pans from face to back of head
  • Progresses out of his seat and out of frame, as camera moves towards the typewriter keyboard, then upward, revealing a silhouette on the wall, as he lights a cigarette and walks out.
  • Camera pans across slightly, revealing the word candy on the paper.

This word will act as the title of the film

audience questionaire - noir film

diary entry - noir film

as you can see from this image, me and michael kept adding information that would create more of an effective story. if has given us reasons for the actions and the voice over which will describe the pain he is in and the confussion. it sets out the past of a man being a reporter and how he has become nothing. this is just the one story we have come up with and is our final piece. it adds in three characters which will be talked about in the voice over however only one character will be visually scene.

film noir group

i was previously working by my self as i had missed a lesson were groups had made the final decision, however, michael and will allowed me to be in their group and began to make ideas with michael. together we are working well however, didn't stay in contact over the february period.
me and michael began to think about the conventions of a noir film and how we could add it all in footage to make it as entertaining and dramatic as possible. through our first lesson together. we concluded our main idea with afew minor tweeks, but seemed to have worked.
i have now taken home the script and adding in the final actions and character directions so that the visual image will be finished. as our idea is all voice over, michael, when returning to school will go over the work and add in the voice over.
we have also collected some propps which are found in the given period of the 50s such as the type writer being the main propp and a radio which will trigger the voice over.

similar products - opening scene & analyses

i am going to write about opening scenes and analyse the plot behind it all.
as you can see this is the opening seen of a touch of evil. From this plot you can see that a mysterious man has planted a bomb in the boot of a old classic car in the streets of a urban area. this car is then driven away leaving a suspense of when the bomb will explode and who will get injured. this suspense draws the audience in by making them keep an eye on that car. this very long shot goes onto following pedestrians which are further found to be a detective. this then involves him into the story when the bomb goes of not far from them. Then the shot ends leaving a mystery behind who had done this and why.
this is pt. 1 of the naked naked kiss. from the opening scene you see an attractive women beating a man. you dont not know the reason, leaving enigma code to think of why she is doing this. then she takes only a segment of a large amount of money he has. this leaves further suspicion that she is not there to take his money maybe just for the previlege of being with her. i believe from the opening that she is a prostitute. however the thing that makes me want to know is why he has pictures of around 10 women on his wall, one being that women. i thing i like is that the credits role while she prepares her self for the night ahead. this is a good way to go through all the people within the production while the video is still roling. then she begins to walk out of the room. that is just the opening scene i have analysed as the rest goes deeper into the film.
tthis is the opening scene of Brute force. i enjoy how they have put the setting behind the credit sequence so that you know what the location is being a high secure prison. it then sets the scene with the actors being put into their cells going through the register so you get to know who the main characters are. it also makes you think why are they in prison and how the old man died. it shows that the main characters have a relationship and stick together within the cell. also when the old man is driven out of the prison in the coffin, it shows how high the security is making no way out. also there is a conflict between a prisoner and the warden.

similar products - film noir

I am going to analyse three noir films and pick out parts which i believe would go well in my film.
i have analysed this video and i believe that there ae key conventions which i have to add into my production. to begin with, the film would have to be in black and white so that it fits in to all noir films.
the male characters would have to wear suits to look like real men but not only this the hero must look attractive and have morals. all characters would smoke as in the past, smoking was thought of as cool and attractive and also was heavily advertised. the female would have to be also very attractive and the middle of the story line driving the conflict. as you can see from this video, the men are fighting over the women through jelousy and this is a reason which i want to add into my film. not only this but the women would have to dress glamerous to look spoilt and rich. i would use shadows to make it look eary and that they are sneaking up on something.
this is a modern version of a noir film but have got confussed with the use of propps. in this video they use technology such as cash machines and the internet which was not invented 50 years ago at this level. however, i want to try and get the accent american style as english is not conventional. also the inspector is a convention as it shows the good trying to solve crimes and problems which is usually the drive of the narrative involving murder and gangs. not only this but i will try and base the film within a city to symbolize a maze full of crime.
this last video basically just sums up what a have said i would like to include within my film. these are:
- black and white
- men wearing suits
-smoking is thought of as cool
-gambling and crime
all the villains will care about is money and how they looked upon such as looking powerful, while others will show morals such as caring to show that they are good driving a conflict between the two.

now i am going to move onto analysing noir posters.
from this poster you can see that the main focus is the middle man. who looks very attract holding a cigarette and in a suit. the back ground is black that suggests he is surrounded by evil and cime which always evolves round him. also the man holding the gun implicates he wants to cause harm to others especially the middle character as the gun is focused on him aswell as his eyes. this also symbolizes good vs evil and villains vs heroes. the to females suggest that the conflict is about them maybe because of jelousy.
it makes the audience want to watch it because you know that there is going to be a conflict with crime between two of more characters. this appeals to males because it is crime but also women would watch it because it involves comance with the females.

this next poster involves just 2 characters who are surrounded by darkness. the use of shadows makes it earing and also the two of them close shows they are in love. the male is attractive and shows morals as he is going infront of the women to protect her which shows they are good people. the women is very attractive and obviously if the man is protecting her it means that they are after the women which shows fighting over romance.
this would appeal to a male audience becasue it also shows violence as he has a weapon meaning he is fighting for survival and for his love.
women would appeal to this because it shows romance how a man is willing to die to save his love.

Noir Conventions

There are five main categories of the conventions of noir films. these are:
- characters/actors
- costume
- location
- camera angles & shots
- lighting

to begin with, characters play a large role in noir films as the black and white make it hard to distinguish who is good and who is bad. top men either bad or good wear suits, black hats and a chunky cigar to show dominance within groups. Among characters of every type, cigarette smoking is rampant as it is an age of were ciggarettes are cool and heavily advertised.
females within noir mainly dress glamerious to make them look wealthy and very attractive to make a kind of jelous and conflict between groups of people. this usually drives the narrative to create a story. females are often dansel in distress and are usually a token to the person who saves her. it is noramlly that the female character is in love with the hero as they are usually very attractive, strong and have their own morals, while the villain usually is un-attractive and has no morals.

From above you can see that the clothing fits the characters role within the play. sometimes to distinguish the villain they are ugly and have facial scars to show past conflicts which makes them ugly. both evil and good carry weapons to show power and authority, however, the villains carry guns such as the tommy gun to show that they are carrying them not for protection but to injury or kill others. this shows that they have no morals and makes you want to fight against them.

location plays a key part of the narrative and to what type of film it is. mainly, but not always, the setting is within large cities to make the film interesting and compact with many problems. Also conventionally you would see that more crimes happen within cities than rural areas which means it shows that many conflicts could occur and many dangers problems. In the eyes of many critics, the city is presented in noir as a "labyrinth" or "maze" which makes a sense of lost or stuck. areas were you believe the crimes will occur are often in those convetional areas such as drug dens, bars, lounges which are usually dominated by gangs. although the location is within the city, it normally trails outside of the city were bodies can be hidden or lost.

noir films often use a large variety of camera angles such as dutch tilt, high angle, ariel and low angles. this is because it can capture the action or emosion in the best way possible. this combined with dull dark lighting mcreates a sense of mystery and hidden identity to drag the story on. also it makes you feel earing building suspense to make you watch on.

Crime, usually murder, is an element of almost all film noirs, in addition to standard-issue greed, jealousy is frequently the criminal motivation.in other common plots, there is usually a fight over the attractive female presence usually resulting in adultary affairs.
